The bad news is that there are many terrible heavy bikes; The good news is that more and more kids bike companies in the market are producing some cool bikes.

I have compiled a list of the best bikes for your 3 to 5-year-olds (i.e. 12 ” and 14 ” bikes). We tested and reviewed several of these bikes; Some of them we didn’t get to, but they’re known worldwide as a great buy, and I’ve listed them too.

We have also created a guide to help you understand why these bikes are the best bikes and what to look for to make sure you are choosing the best bike for your single child.

If you have short time, scroll straight down to our top picks.

Note: These bikes are best for 3-year-olds, with the intent that they can ride it for a few years

Bikes suitable for ages 4 to 6 years (16-inch bikes)

If your child loves to ride bikes (or maybe she loves to ride bikes), you want to make sure you get a bike on which they can grow their skills. With all of the bikes on the market it can be confusing to know which bike to buy and how to stack up against each other.

To help you, we’ve tested dozens of 16-inch (and some 18-inch kids’ bikes) to help find the best ones. We’ve rounded up a list of the bikes that really are the best – lightweight, well-designed, and built to withstand abuse.

We’ve also provided some tips on how to choose the best bike for a 4, 5, or 6 year old, and a comparison chart so you can see how you stack them all.

How to choose the best bike ever for a 3 or 4 year old

Best Bikes for Your 3 to 5 Year Old

We are about to bring you a list of all the good bikes on the market, but how do you know which one is the best for your little one? Consider these factors, then use the comparison chart at the end of this article to help you choose.

Understand the size of bike they need

Every child is different. For example, my son and cousin who are only a few months apart are roughly six inches tall. Therefore, it is vital to measure your child before purchasing a bike. What may work for a 3-year-old child may not work for another until the age of four.

For details on how to measure your child and choose the right-sized bike, read our Kids’ Bike Sizing Guide.

To achieve maximum comfort and stability, I recommend that your inner child be at least the same minimum seat height. While technically their interior length can be slightly shorter than the minimum seat height (proportional to toes), toddlers who are learning to ride only do their best if they can place their feet on the ground.

Weight is the single most important factor

After making sure the bike is the right size, the most important thing to consider is the weight. When comparing two bikes, I will always choose the lightest one. It makes a big difference in the level of fun a child has and in the length of time he can ride. Find a bike that is no more than 30% of your child’s body weight (isn’t it solid)?

Of all the bikes on my list, the Woom 2 is the lightest. It’s also my son’s favorite – I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Bigger wheels are better (most of the time)
The addition of the 12-inch bikes on this list (Cleary Gecko and Specialized Hotrock) is that it really suits young riders (up to 2.5 years old). If your child has been on a balance bike from a very young age and is ready to graduate to a pedal bike sooner than most, switch to a 12-inch bike for sure.

On the other hand, if your child is 3.5+, I recommend choosing a bike with 14-inch wheels instead. why? The bigger wheel size makes it a whole lot easier to get past obstacles – cracks in the pavement, rocks, bumps in the bike park, etc., I’ve seen for myself my son performs much better on a 14-inch bike compared to a 12-inch bike.

You get what you pay for

Unfortunately, just like most things in life, the more you spend on a bike, the better the quality. Buy a cheaper bike at a supermarket and it will be heavy and crumbly.

The good news is that when you buy a quality bike, like any bike on our top 5 list, it will last for many kids. This makes it a good investment if you have younger children, it can be taken to them or for resale.

Say no to the coaster brakes
I am a staunch supporter of teaching children to use the parking brake and bypass the roller coaster brake. I’m now at a point where I wouldn’t even put my son on a bike with coaster brakes, or teach another kid to ride a bike with one.

Skip the training wheels
Training wheels? Just don’t do that! If your child has not mastered the balance bike yet, start there and switch to a pedal bike later.

If you must have training wheels I have listed those bikes that do provide them in the table below, but you will notice that most of the best kids’ bikes don’t have them anymore.

7 tips to help you choose the best baby bike for your child

We understand that purchasing kids’ bikes can be confusing. For starters, kids’ bikes are oddly resized, and many of the best brands differ from those on the adult market.

Then there are more subtle questions: Which is better – the roller coaster brake or the hand brake? How much should one expect to spend on acquiring a quality kids bike?

Take a deep breath and relax. We are about to help overcome the confusion and provide the bottom details on how to choose the best bike for your child. Here are 7 tips to get you started.

Understand how children’s bicycles are sized.

Best Bikes for Your 3 to 5 Year Old
Bikes for Your 3 to 5 Year

Kids’ bike sizes refer to the size of the wheel (s). This differs from adult bikes that are generally measured in the frame size of the bike. Typical wheel sizes for kids’ bikes are 12 “, 14”, 16 “, 18”, 20 “and 24”. The older the child, the larger the wheels. The chart below gives you a rough indication of age and length related to bike size. However, the best way to find out which bike size will fit your child is to measure the bike’s inside. Which brings us to our next advice …

Measure your child’s height from the inside.

The best way to fit the bike to the child is to measure the inner seam. Do not skip this step. The suggested bike for a 5-year-old might fit a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old. Every child is different, and every child deserves a bike that fits. Good bike manufacturers will reveal the right seam length for each of their bike.

To measure your child’s inner length, get a tape measure, book and kiddo. Have them stand against the wall, either with bare feet or in socks.

Have them hold a book between their legs, as close to the crotch as possible, and place a mark on the wall at the top of the book. Then use a tape measure from the floor to the mark. Easy!

When it’s time to shop by bike, keep this information on hand. Choose a bike that falls within the minimum recommended indoor range so that your child has little room to grow.

Find out about the best brands of kids’ bikes.

There are a few kids’ bikes that are head and shoulders above the rest. If you want a great bike for your little one (especially toddlers), consider one of these brands: Whatever you do, don’t buy a larger size bike. Riding too big is frustrating and dangerous.
Early Rider
Each of these brands designs and develops their bikes, specifically for children. This means that the child’s weight and geometry are appropriate. The components are of high quality and will last a long time before needing replacement. These are also some of the most popular sellers on Craigslist and other resale forums, so keep that in mind when purchasing a new one. If you buy a good bike, you’ll be able to sell it later for a good price.

Once kids get into the 20 and 24 bikes, the number of brands already unlocks more than the 8 mentioned above, especially for bikes with more discipline (mountain bike, road bike, cyclocross, etc.). Until then, you’ll find good options from one of the 9 brands mentioned above. Choose a lightweight bike.

Most kids’ bikes on the market are ridiculously heavy. It is common for kids’ bikes to weigh up to 50% of their body weight, and weigh more than an adult bike. If you are going to choose a bike based on any one factor, choose it based on weight.

It will be difficult for the child to maneuver a very heavy bike and ride for very long distances. A father told me the other day that his 8-year-old son hates riding his bike and refuses to go more than 5 miles. Finally my dad collapsed and bought him a more expensive, lighter bike and was shocked when he found his son made a full 360 degrees. Suddenly he was begging to go cycling long distances quickly.

The aluminum or titanium frame will be lighter. Do not write off the steel completely though. If the wheels and other components are light enough, steel can still be a strong and quality option.

The Ultimate Guide to Balanced Bikes (and Comparison Chart)

If you are the parent (or grandparent) of a toddler or preschooler, you no doubt have known about the ubiquitous balance bike! It’s not uncommon to see a balance bike every time you go to the playground, cycle around the neighborhood or head to a play date.

In this guide, I tried to outline everything you need to know about a balance bike, whether you are completely new to bikes or an experienced cyclist. For starters, I start by explaining balance bikes and why they are so popular and then delve into everything you need to know to choose the best balance bike for your child. You can choose a bike from the “top” lists or use the comprehensive comparison chart. You’ll also find we have detailed first-person reviews for many of these bikes.

Now go ahead and clean up that spilled milk, grab a new baby snack, and then keep reading.

What is a balance bike?
Balance bikes, also known as push bikes or bicycles, are pedalless bikes designed for young children. Once babies are able to walk and acquire decent motor skills (generally around 18 months), they can start on a balance bike. These bikes differ from tricycles in that they have two wheels and are designed to be real bikes unlike games. If your baby is not yet 18 months old, or isn’t ready for a balance bike, consider a pre-bike or scooter.

Why choose a balance bike?
There are several reasons why balance bikes are so popular. For example, it allows young children to start cycling. When babies begin to ride a balance bike at 18 months of age, they are often able to pedal (without training wheels at 2.5 or 3 years old)! It also helps toddlers and preschoolers develop gross motor skills.

Another reason why balance bikes are so great is that unlike a tricycle or a training wheel bike, balance bikes allow kids to ride long distances around the neighborhood or even off-road on a single track or BMX track. It is not unusual to see young children develop very impressive bike handling skills on their balance bikes.

Finally, for children of any age, balance bikes do what their name suggests – they teach balance! You might very well remember trying to learn to ride when you were a kid. Your parents probably took off your training wheels and grabbed your bike running with you around the neighborhood. Crashes and tears ensued. Most kids who learn to ride a balanced bike completely bypass their training wheels, and when they switch to a pedal bike – they already know how to balance and ride. No crashes or tears (or at least not many). Now that you are convinced that your child needs a balance bike, it is time to choose one. If you want to skip the extra information, buy one of these bikes, and you won’t regret it. No further research required.

7 reasons why your child needs a balance bike

It has been difficult to go anywhere without seeing a precocious child wandering around on his Strider in recent years. There’s a reason why parents everywhere start their babies – up to 18 months old – on a balanced bike. In addition to being fun, the balanced bike helps in developing overall motor skills, builds confidence, and provides an easy transition to a pedal bike. Here are some of the top reasons why you should get a balance bike for your little one if he doesn’t already have one.

Development of gross motor skills

This is the least mentioned and most important reason for a balance bike. As a parent, I always look for materials and toys that are appropriate for my child’s development. Balance bikes are one of the best tools out there to help your child develop their gross motor skills. According to Kid Sense Child Development, the balance of learning and coordination is important for injury prevention, self-regulation, and the development of a foundation for the future development of fine motor skills. Balance bikes also help develop core muscle strength and endurance.

Easy transition to pedal bike

Most of us have vivid memories of learning to ride a bike – and they aren’t always good memories. On my first ride without training wheels I fell, hit my face, and ended up with a bloody mouth. Children who begin riding a balance bike usually easily transition to a pedal bike, abandoning the training wheels altogether. Toddlers who start riding a balance bike early (at 18 months – 24 months) often ride a pedal bike without training wheels at 3 years of age. Balance bike introduces children to balance and movement concepts and provides a safe basis for learning to ride a bike.

Playing sports

We’ve all heard reports of childhood obesity in the United States. Children are frighteningly overweight and lack exercise. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity has doubled over the past 30 years. Fortunately, when it comes to young children, they don’t see the activity as “exercise” – rather, it is “fun.” This is especially true when it comes to cycling. Another bonus is that riding a balance bike will burn off some of that endless energy in toddlers. My 2 year old can run a few miles on his bike. When he gets home he’s taking a really good nap. Get an extra hour of free time for mom and dad.

This is the most obvious reason to purchase a balance bike for your child. Almost all kids love bikes – it’s a universal thing for kids. If you want to make your child happy and put a smile on their face, the bike will do just that.

I don’t think anything makes my boy squirt his tiny chest like riding his balanced bike. Every time he rides over a “ledge” or “jump,” or manages to ski ten feet without stopping, he stands out proudly. I like that his balanced bike helps him develop a sense of athletic ability and confidence in his body. Especially for really young children, the simplest things (like walking fast enough to keep up with mom and dad) can be so difficult that they are amazed at their ability to ride a bike.

Exposure to fresh air

The best thing about bikes is that they give us a reason to get out in the great outdoors. It’s hard to get my son excited about anything like animation, but he loves to ride a bike. Most children today do not get enough time in nature, causing a wide range of behavioral and emotional problems. If you get a well-built balance bike, you can not only ride around the aisle, but can also ride on the lawn or even on your favorite walking path.

So many of us spend ridiculous amounts playing games. Most of these games extend for a season or so of interest then are eliminated in favor of something new. Plastic toys break and end in a landfill. On the other hand, your child can use a quality balance bike for several years and then remain in good enough condition to be delivered to a younger sibling or sold on Craigslist. Even after a kid switches to a pedal bike, he often enjoys a balance bike to ride the BMX track or do tricks in the backyard. This makes the balance bike a cost effective and environmentally friendly purchase.

Best toddler bikes for 1, 2 or 3 year olds

If you are looking for a toddler bike, but don’t even know where to start, this article is for you. We know it can be a little confusing – especially if this is your first child – to figure out which bikes are the best bikes and how to start your little one. That’s why we created this guide.

We share the different types of toddler bikes, our top picks, why cycling is important to your child’s development, and what to consider when choosing a bike for your toddler.

Why get a bike for your child

The earlier your child starts cycling, the easier it will be for him to ride the bike – for the rest of his life. Kids who learn to ride a bike as a toddler have a much easier time learning balance, pedaling, brakes and cruises. We started our son on a balance bike when he was a little over a year old and had him pedal practice (sans training wheels) at 2.5 years old. He is about six years old and is twice as good at cycling than many children his age, thanks to an early start.

Even if you don’t care much about cycling, there are plenty of other reasons why your child should take a bike. Bikes provide exercise, get your kids outdoors, and help build confidence. Balance bikes, in particular, can also develop and improve your child’s overall motor skills.

Types of toddler bicycles

If someone in passing asks me what kind of bike I’m bringing for a toddler, I’ll automatically reply with “Balance bike!”
The truth is that several types of bikes may be suitable for a toddler depending on his age and skill level. Here, I’ll be going through two different options including rides, tricycles, balance bikes, and bicycles.

Riding toys

Best for: Toddlers aged 12-18 months

The smallest of toddlers (from around 12 months old) can enjoy the ride on game. Usually these are three or four-wheeled bikes that help young children start cruising on a bike, but they are suitable for toddlers who are not yet old enough for a balance bike. We bought a ride on toy for my son’s first birthday and it was one of the best purchases we’ve ever made. It helped get him a cycling enthusiast and provided him with years of entertainment – even after he switched to a pedal bike.

Balance bikes

Best for: Toddlers from 18 months old until they’re ready to transition to a pedal bike

Balance bikes, also known as push bikes or bicycles, are pedalless bikes designed for young children. Once babies are able to walk and acquire decent motor skills (generally around 18 months), they can start on a balance bike.

Balance bikes are our favorite type of bike for toddlers because they give kids the tools they need to succeed on the bike later. In fact, the majority of children who learn to ride a balance bike as a toddler will be able to completely skip the training wheels by simply switching to a pedal bike. Balance bikes are also excellent for developing gross motor skills and boosting confidence.

Another popular option for young children is a tricycle. Tricycles or large wheels can be a lot of fun for backyard use, but they don’t teach true cycling skills. If you go this route, we recommend choosing a balance bike as well. One notable option is the Wishbone 3-in-1 that converts from a tricycle to a balance bike.

Pedal bikes

Similar to tricycles, pedal bikes with training wheels hinder skill development in this era. It is heavier than a balance bike which makes it difficult for little ones to handle. They also prevent young children from developing balance which is crucial for success on a scooter.

If you decide to buy a pedal bike, make sure to remove the cranks and / or pedals and teach your child to kick off quickly and glide first – similar to what he would do on a balance bike.

Once a toddler has mastered the balance bike (or a pedal bike without training wheels), you can then switch it to a 12-inch pedal bike without training wheels. This can be as young as 2.5 or 3 years depending on your child’s interests and ability. If your child is ready for their first real pedal bike, be sure to choose a lightweight one. At this age, the biggest obstacle to success is the bike that weighs a lot.

Things to consider when choosing a bike for your child

Indoor versus external use

Will the bike mainly be used indoors or outdoors? For indoor use, we love rides and balance bikes with rubber or foam wheels. You want to make sure that they are not going to mark your floors. Avoid plastic wheels that do not contain rubber, as they are very slippery on interior floors.

The Y Velo balance bike is one of our favorite bikes for indoor riding.
If your child will be riding an outdoor bike, make sure to buy a real bike (balance bike or pedal bike) that has pneumatic (pneumatic) tires rather than one with foam or plastic. Plastic is never a good choice; Foam frames can be suitable for very light aisle use. If your child will be riding on mixed terrain, including dirt, gravel, or uneven pavement, invest in a bike with pneumatic (pneumatic) tires. They get superior traction compared to plastic or foam tires.

Game versus bike

The next thing to consider is whether you want to buy a “toy” or an actual bike. Many of the toddler bikes are toys – and that’s okay !!!

But, if you want your child to gain real cycling skills or take on adventures outside of your backyard, you need to get a real bike for him. The “real” bike is a balanced or pedal bike with (pneumatic) tires, a high-quality aluminum or steel frame, and (maybe) even the brakes.

Size and readiness

When should you start your toddler on the bike? Once they can walk!

As mentioned earlier, young children (around 12 months) may be interested in bicycles. They are well served by ride. Around 18 months, I recommend trying a balance bike. At this age, your biggest problem will be finding a small enough balance bike. (You can find our recommendations, in our post on the Best Balance Bikes for Toddlers.) Be sure to measure your child’s inner length and compare it to the minimum seat post height for the bike before making the purchase. Your child’s inside length must be at least the same as the minimum seat height to fit the bike.

You have trouble establishing a lasting friendship and relationship: This can happen due to low self-esteem or reckless behavior, both of which stem from an authoritarian parenting style. Studies have shown that when parents are not emotionally invested in their children, the child can later develop problems with regulating emotions and be unable to interact with others.

The development of anxiety and depression: Research has shown that children who experience poor parenting during their childhood are more likely to have anxiety and depression as adults. Poor parenting today can affect a child’s mindset, making him a bad parent later in life.

Criminal Behavior: Some parents indulge in corporal punishment because they believe that it is the only way to deal with naughty children. However, the frequent use of physical blame can make a child think it is okay to hit someone for any reason. As a child advances into adulthood, this belief transforms into an unethical tendency to do intentional harm to others.

These circumstances seem very scary, but it is never too late or difficult to change your parenting style for the greater good of your child.

How to be a better parent?

It is never too late to change your parenting style, and here are some tips for being a better parent:

1. Actively participate in parenting:

Not only are you a child’s guardian, but you are also someone who teaches essential life lessons. Go beyond the creature’s comforts, and create an emotional connection. Focus on a relationship that is in control, but not at the expense of love, so that the child has a healthy upbringing.

2. Refrain from screaming and hitting the child:

Kids can be difficult with their tendency to be naughty. It is very likely that you will lose patience and screaming, which may leave the child crying and upset. Some parents have little anxiety when spanking their children, even if it is in front of relatives or even strangers. It makes you bad parents. You might feel sorry for that later, but the damage would have happened.

3. Learn to control a naughty child’s seizures in a more logical way. For example, if he breaks a sister’s game, he takes his favorite game and says he only gets it when he apologizes and vows never to do it again. Once he does so, you must explain to him why his actions were wrong and how he should not destroy someone else’s property.

4. Establish the rules after discussion:

If you set some new rules, talk to the child before implementing them. That way, he’s a part of the procedures and realizes he’s not supposed to be doing some things. Having discussions with the child makes him or her feel important, and it can boost his self-esteem. He will also be responsible for his actions and will hesitate to do something wrong.

5. Let the child have some options:

Ask for an opinion before you decide something for the child. And it is more applicable to teens, who may feel upset when no one asks about their preference before making a decision on their behalf. For example, instead of jumping to a conclusion, “You need a new education. I’ll change it tomorrow,” you could say, “I don’t think this tuition fee works well. Are we going to change it tomorrow?” It’s an excellent way to teach and educate a child’s decision-making process. Always in the concept of responsibility.

6. Listen when he says something:

Good parenting is also about listening to your child with keen interest when he has something to share. It includes his regular account of the day and all of his accomplishments, which all seem trivial but might mean a lot to a child. Don’t ignore his words for another day or cancel them with something else like, “I’ll listen to you later; clean your room first!” This is frustrating, and even though he’s just a kid, he feels like you’ve acted rudely with him.

Appreciate your little one when he is honest and sincere. Babies who are reprimanded over telling the truth may ultimately prefer to lie to save their skin.

7. Set good examples:

Verbs can speak louder than words, and it is perhaps the best way to make your child understand the importance of something. You are setting a positive example by practicing something you always ask your child to do. Children learn healthy habits from parents and are less likely to adopt bad habits when their parents refrain from doing so.

I assure them that you will always love them.

2. appreciate generously:

When you value your children’s accomplishments, they are motivated to do it better. It also tells them that you are proud of their accomplishments.

Praise your children for making them feel proud of their accomplishments.

Be clear in explaining why you value them. Example: I am proud that you put great efforts into completing your vacation project.

3- Avoid Comparisons:

Every child is different and has unique potential. Learn about your children’s talent and motivation to reach their goals. When you compare your child to others, it makes them feel inferior. And therefore,

Do not discourage your children by comparing them to others.

Do not show favoritism to one child.

Encourage children to take care of themselves rather than asking older siblings to take care of the younger ones.

 4- Listen to understand:

Communication is effective when it flows in two ways. Only when you listen to your children will you understand their problems and be able to help them.

Make sure you talk to your child every day for a certain period, whether that be after school, bedtime, or during dinner.

Avoid gadgets during interaction time.

5- Set the rules and results:

The rules help your kids instill discipline and order in their lives.

Your rules should be logical, fair, and not so strict that children fear them.

The rules and the consequences for breaking them should be clear.

The rules must be applied consistently, without any exceptions.

Make sure you and your spouse (and others at home) are on the same page as the rules apply.

Avoid taking punitive actions when your child does not follow the rules.

6- Share their special moments:

Whether it’s your child’s graduation party, dance show or play, be present and make him happy. It will boost their confidence and make the day unforgettable.

7. Be sure to lead by example:

Children learn more from what you do rather than what you say. If you want your kids to be the way you want them to be, you need:

.Behave appropriately in front of your children.

   .Respect your child and others.

.Be friendly with your spouse so that your child understands intimacy, love, and teamwork.

  .Take care of the environment.

8. Reflect on your childhood:

At certain times, we subconsciously take cues from our parents while raising our children. In some cases, we may want to do things differently and in others to follow our parents’ footsteps.

Think about the things you want to change, and act accordingly.

For example, if your parents are strict with you, you may want to relax a little with your child while the rules are in place.

9. Teaching socialization:

It is important to teach social skills to your child. You need to:

Encourage your children to interact with their classmates (not while attending class, though).

Tell them to maintain eye contact with everyone who is speaking.

Make your child understand that not all people they meet are cute but they must learn to accept many behaviors.

10. Help the child be independent:

Teach your child to make decisions instead of relying on you all the time. You need their help in differentiating good from bad and right from wrong.

Unless you feel it necessary to intervene, let your child make his decisions, whether it be about his friends or his hobbies.

Do not force them to conform to predefined models.

Be firm but friendly: Establishing rules is important for disciplining children. The rules must be reasonable in order for your child to be able to follow them. Do not punish if your child cannot follow the rules, instead explain their importance.

Be sympathetic: Before you react to your children’s bad behavior, look at the problem through their eyes. Think about what you would do if you were a young child because at this age your child cannot explain his actions.

Encourage him to learn: Encourage your child to explore new things. Allow them to try their hand at eating, brushing, and bathing. Encourage good behavior.

The nursery:

When young children enter preschool age, they are interested in the world around them. Their personality begins to form, and they begin to form their perceptions. Here are some tips for preschooler parenting:

Encourage your child to socialize.

Help them learn to use words and develop their language skills.

Be consistent in disciplining your child.

Be clear about your expectations of your child.

Let your child have meals with the family.

Limit screen time to one hour per day.

Providing age-appropriate games and toys.

Middle childhood:

Children become independent at this stage. Their physical, mental and social skills begin to develop rapidly. Here are some tips for raising them:

Help your child become responsible, and set goals for them.

Teach your child to respect others by being a role model.

Determine rules and findings and apply them consistently.

Participate in some fun games with your child.

Encourage your child to do sports and extracurricular activities.

As children enter their teens, they experience physical and emotional changes, which are manifested by mood swings, behavioral problems and confusion.

Make an effort to understand their feelings and expectations of you. The following tips can help:

Trust: Building trust is a slow process. You need to earn your teen’s trust. Allow your relationship to open up and share important things about you and your family so that your teen can trust you and potentially share his or her personal things.

Respect: If you want your teen to respect you, you respect him. Don’t dismiss or criticize their thoughts as being irrational or childish. You can disagree with them, but you need to acknowledge and respect their thoughts, opinions, and feelings. Do not criticize them in front of their friends. This will reduce their self-esteem.

Reassure: Let your teen know you are there for him when he needs you. Most likely, teens want to be independent, but assure them that you are ready to help if they need you.

The Rules: If you are totally consistent with enforcing the rules, it sends a signal for your teen to stick with them.

Be Attentive: You need to pay full attention to what your teen is doing or thinking. It makes them feel safe, loved and privileged. Once you do this, your child will also love and respect you.

Constructive criticism: Being a good parent doesn’t mean you have to always be nice to them. When your teen makes a mistake, give constructive feedback and be gentle while doing it.

Don’t force them: Teens are more likely to rebel when you push them to do something. The more you force them into something, the higher their chances of not listening to you.

Let them explore: Allow your teens to pursue dreams, follow their passions, and try new things. Don’t impose your ideas on them, let them create and act on their ideas.

Make them aware of the vices: Talk to your child about the harmful effects of smoking, drinking alcohol, drug use and having unprotected sex. Talk to them openly and explain the consequences. Inform them of the possibility of health problems they could have.

Parenting is not easy. It takes all of your time and effort to be a good parent, but anxiety is present at every stage of your child’s development. Trust them, love them, and do your homework as a parent. This will provide a safe and ideal family for your child to grow into a responsible person.

In the first part of her book, Laura Markham answers this question,

peaceful parent happy kids summary coming right up peaceful parent happy kids how to stop yelling and start connecting by dr. Laura Markham, there are three big ideas at the heart of this book regulating yourself fostering connection and coaching not controlling this article will cover regulating yourself a fancy way of saying your ability to stay calm. We’ve all been there that moment right in between when your child pushes your buttons and your reaction it really is the defining moment we’re all hardwired to respond to negative emotion in one of three ways

fight flight or freeze but this moment isn’t usually an emergency and how we react sets the stage for our relationship with our child and how our own child regulates his emotions instead of fight-flight or freeze studies show over and over again that parents who respond with warm respectful attunement to the unique needs of their individual child setting limits supportively and coaching their child’s emotions constructively raised terrific kids so to start when there’s a confrontation between you the parent and your child that incites your anger the most important thing you can do as parents are mindful of your emotion

that means paying attention to what you’re feeling without acting on it after all research shows that expressing anger while angry actually makes one more angry this, in turn, makes the other person hurt afraid or angry and causes a rift in the relationship when angry wait before disciplining but how do you shift yourself from upset to peace firstly commit yourself to responding to your child calmly say it verbally visualize commit to your child even let them hold you accountable than when

the inevitable happens to stop drop and breathe when you notice you’re starting to lose your temper stop talking step away from the situation breathe deeply ten times splash your face with cold water even or say a mantra that helps dr. Markham likes I choose to love what’s your mantra let me know in the comments below perhaps I’ll use it remember it’s okay to do all this in front of your children you’re modeling how to control anger to them now start the interaction over sometimes it helps

if you consider what’s the thought that’s upsetting you, for example, he’s disrespecting my authority realize there’s always another side to every story like he’s showing me how upset he is he’s allowed to have feelings how pure body released the feelings you can tap the acupuncture point at the edge of your hand while breathing deeply, for example, these tips also help you keep your cool when your child has a meltdown when that happens to keep it simple your child needs you to witness her outpouring of emotion and let her know that she’s still lovable despite all these yucky feelings your child can’t learn until she’s

calm so in the meantime tolerate the emotion without taking action to acknowledge your own feelings and take a deep breath to realize that expressing feelings is a good thing once your child feels her emotions will evaporate remind yourself that it’s the emotions that she represses that pop up without warning and make her act out later on, of course, all of this isn’t easy parenting is hard work if you’re finding yourself frequently resentful depleted or exhausted with more and more negative thoughts about your child or you’re just finding it difficult to be patient and yelling more, in general, this is a signal that you need to

nurture yourself more make it a habit to tune into yourself in small ways as often as possible throughout your day even if you have to set your alarm to do it and find support from those around you when you take care of yourself you’ll be better equipped to take care of your kids if you’re wondering how your kids will learn if you don’t raise your voice to know that when kids are scared they go into fight or flight as well the learning centers of the brain shut down they may comply right away but they don’t really learn anything in the long run also his misbehavior is actually an SOS that your child needs your help he has big feelings

he can’t understand nor articulate verbally of course you set limits and redirect behavior but you want your child to follow your guidance because he loves you and would never want to disappoint you not because you scare him and this brings us to the next big idea of the book fostering connection, fortunately, I have a video summary of that as well and I’m telling you now it contains valuable information that will transform your relationship with your child so check it out the link is in the description box below also make sure you press the subscribe button as well as the bail decided to be notified when I post more videos I’ve got lots more on this book as well as others coming your way and if you enjoyed this video give it a virtual thumbs up and share away.

How to Discipline Children

I’ve been spending my life trying to put
the pieces together of how attachment unfolds. And in fact, I had a fantastic opportunity
to take a whole year off just to study all the attachment theories throughout
the ages and see how it is that attachment meant to happen. And it’s a beautiful story. I’ll try to tell it very quickly and very
thoroughly. In the first year of life, a child does attach
through wanting to be with, be in sight, smell, in hearing, in touch. But by the second year of life, a new way of
attaching should open up in which the child wants to be like, not only with but liked. And this is the key to language acquisition,
to stamping out a form on their behavior; it’s a key to so many things. If that goes well, the third part by the third
year, a child becomes preoccupied with belonging and becomes preoccupied with loyalty to be
on the same side as a different way of closeness, to take the same side, to serve
and obey. And that’s when the obedience instincts
begin to be there. By the fourth year of life, you should see
a massive quest for significance in a child – to matter, because he feels close now when he
is dear to those that he’s attached. Now, if everything unfolds correctly, the fifth
year is incredible. The limbic system, the command center, or the
amygdala of the command center, the limbic system, the emotional brain pulse, stops, and the child gives his heart to whomever he is attached. He falls in love. And he’s deeply emotionally attached to
his kitten, to his grandma, to anything there. And this is amazing. And it’s important because the child develops at that level, that’s a stage for the rest of parenting. We cannot parent children whose hearts we
do not have. We can’t parent even our grandchildren, whose
nature we do not have. Or our adult children. It is essential. So children need to fall deeply into attachment, and we need to make it easy for them. The last stage is exciting. If it’s safe to attach, there’s no defend
emotionally; then, the child wants to share all that is within his heart. And so the 6-year-old is busy telling her
secrets, and not to have any secrets that divide this is the beginning of psychological intimacy,
which should characterize our marriages and our best friendships. And so we’ve got all kinds of intimacies:
with, like, belonging, mattering, our heart, emotional intimacy, and then finally, psychological
intimacy. And this is a context in which children
are meant to be raised. So the beginning – the infancy and toddler
– is just the beginning of a wonderful unfolding and development of a relationship’s capacity.

4 Positive Parenting Tips.

1    is to stay calm. Don’t allow the child’s mood to control yours.
Keep breathing. It’s essential for us as parents to be in charge of our emotional stuff. Kids are not very good at regulating emotions. Especially
young kids. And you’ll notice this; they get tipped over by the smallest things.
We don’t have to as parents because we’re grown-ups. Having ways to control
our own emotions puts us in a powerful position as a parent. And probably the
quickest way to get there is to make sure that you keep breathing. I know you
breathe all the time. But there’s a little trick to breathing that helps us
to regulate our own emotion. And here’s what it is. Breathe in through your nose; this always works unless you have a cold. Take a nice deep breath in through your
nose and hold briefly. Maybe 5 seconds, maybe 10 seconds. Just keep it, let it
stretch a little bit, and then breathe out through your mouth
nice and slow. Restrict the flow here. Kind of like you’re blowing out birthday
candles. Nice and slow. You want to take about twice as long to exhale as you did to inhale. I tell you what, if you’ll practice this a little bit, you’ll get
better at consciously calming your brain’s fight-or-flight response. It calms you down; it helps you to regulate your emotions. And that’s important when you’re working with a stubborn child.

2. Remember what you control. You’ve noticed this right some things
you own other items you don’t. Let’s get clear about which is
which. Remember what you control. Why is this important? Because when you’re
dealing with a child. Now, we said stubborn children in the title, but you
know what? All kids are like this to a certain extent. I think all human beings
are. We want to control what we control. Your kids don’t get to control very much.
And so they’ll usually pick something that they control, and you get frustrated
because you can’t control the thing that they’re holding. Get back onto what
you control. This is beautiful because it puts you in a position where no power
struggle is even necessary. You don’t have to argue; you don’t have to convince
them. You’ve got control over this thing. Well, what do I mean by that? Well, the things
you provide, services that you give them. Access to certain things in your home.
You control all of these things. Whether or not your kids want you to. So get
focused on those things that you control, implement those into the discipline. And
it puts you in a position where you no longer have to be in a power struggle
with your kids. Do you remember my three rules for power struggles? Rule number
1. Avoid them. Don’t get into them if you don’t have to. Rule number 2,
if you can’t avoid them, win them. I tell kids this too. But they’re really good at
it already because they already know rule number 3, which is you pick the
issues. And you always pick something that you control. Don’t get into a power
struggle over something you don’t control or you’ll violate rule number
2, you won’t win that power struggle. Focus on those things that you control.
Rule number

3. Empower what they control. Your kids are in charge of their

own choices. If you haven’t figured that out yet, pay closer attention. Your
kids’ll teach you this. You don’t control everything. They control some things.
Empower what they control. Now, by this, I mean, focus on their choice. And it’s okay
for you to say, “You know what, sweetie? That’s your choice. Okay?” And you smile a
little bit because if mom’s smiling, kids are thinking. You smile a little bit as
you say, “You know what? That’s your choice.” I’ve done this with teenagers too. One of
my teenage sons asked me once. “Dad, can I go to this party?” And I’m like, “Tell me
more.” Because he left out some of the vital information, right? So, he told me
more about the party. I didn’t feel comfortable with it as a dad. I just didn’t feel comfortable with the party. So, as he pressed me, “Well, can I go?” I said this: “That’s up to you. You’ll choose whether you go or not.
That’s up to you. But I’m not giving you my permission. So, if you go, you’re going without my permission. Do you understand that?” And he’s like, “What? What? So, can I go
or not?” “Oh, that’s up to you.” See, I want to
empower and honor his choice. Empowering and honoring his choice doesn’t mean
that I’m giving him exactly what he wants.
I’m not. He wanted my permission. I control my permission. So I’m following
that other tip I already gave you. Empowering his choice means that I
acknowledged that he’s going to do it. You know what? I used to say to him, “No,
you can’t go.” And it was a bald-faced lie. He could go. And he proved it to me by
sneaking out and going. You see what I’m talking about.
I don’t want to lie to my kids. I would encourage you not to lie to your kids.
Empower their choice. Honor their choice. And make sure you follow through with
the consequences too. My son knew that if he went to the party without my
permission, there would be a consequence that he doesn’t control. He chose not to
go. And I empowered that choice as well. Son, nice choice.
I love the way you thought through that. He was a little frustrated at the time, but I think he really appreciated that I empowered and honored his choice.
Powerful. Okay, we’re up to the number.

4. Positive parenting tips on how to deal with a stubborn child.

Listen rather than argue. Don’t get drawn into
the argument, okay? Stubborn kids sometimes want to start an argument
because it gives them a false sense of power. Think about it. Little people, big
people. If little people can get big people to argue with them, it gives them
a sense of power and control. That’s not appropriate, really for the setting. So do
some listening. And when your child asserts their little will about whatever
it is. Take a listening approach where you might say something like, “Oh, well,
that’s interesting. Tell me more about that.” Okay. Now, that’s going to freak him out
a little bit because they’re not expecting to hear that from you. But
there’s 2 things that this does for you. It puts you in a position where it’s
easier to assign empathy, and I’m coming back to that in just a moment. It also
changes the dynamic of this conversation from an argument to a dialogue. Something where they get to express what they’re thinking and feeling. And oftentimes, if you can draw this out, they will make better decisions anyway.
You got two ears and one mouth; let’s use them in that proportion. Do a lot of
listening if you feel that your child is stubborn. See if you can understand
where they’re coming from. And that will help to empower you to make a good
choice about how to follow through. And then finally, I alluded to this just a
moment ago. Use empathy rather than anger. We get angry really fast as parents. And
you know what? I want to throw you a bone here because you’re not a bad
Aaron just because you get angry. Anger is a really great indicator of feeling. But
it’s confusing because when we feel anger, we think that it means somebody
else needs to change something. And you know who it is too, don’t you?
Well, that’s the confusing part. Anger is a great indicator, feeling that this
person needs to change something. In fact, there’s 3 feelings I’d tell you to
watch out for. Frustration, anger, and resentment. Instead of the anger, let’s go
to a place of empathy. Now, empathy has two important parts to it. You understand
and care how someone else feels. Honestly, this is one of the things that we really
want to teach our children. So modeling that to them is a powerful way to help
them learn to understand care how someone else feels. The other thing that
you will notice as you go to empathy is that you feel like you want to save them
from their consequences. Just notice that. And it comes from the best part of your
heart as a parent because you love them. You don’t want them to experience
anything difficult, painful, frustrating, hard. And that’s why we want to save our
kids from the consequences of their own choices.
Empathy allows you to back off from that a little bit. Let them feel the
consequence, which is going to hurt your heart as a parent, isn’t it? Let them feel
the consequence and then join with them empathically where you show them that
you understand and care how they feel. Put your arm around them. Let them know
that you can see that this is hard for them. But don’t bail them out. See that’s
where we usually go to the anger where we bail them out, and then we ball them
out. It steeled 3-yards of parenting.  There are four powerful tips for you
in working with stubborn children. I hope that helps.

How to raise successful kids without over-parenting

Better parent without yelling? Actually, the yelling kind of spoils things,
doesn’t it? I’ve got five specific tips for you today. I think you’re gonna like
this.  Metacognition is a made-up word. We make up words in psychology because it makes us feel smart. If we put it on a level,
cognition is at this level. Cognition means thinking. Metacognition is at a higher level. It’s thinking about thinking. And do you notice that you can do this? Be careful with it. It’s going to drive you nuts. But notice that you can think about your own thinking. Now, while we’re in that metacognitive state, why are you yelling? Think about it from that level. Why are you yelling? What is it that’s
going on inside of you that has you yelling? As your awareness comes up about
that, so does your control. Most commonly, yelling is a side effect of frustration
or anger or sometimes just plain old habit. It’s what we’ve been trained
taught and educated to do. Maybe by our own parents. I don’t know. Whatever it is
for you, take a moment to connect with why you’re yelling. Are your expectations
being violated? Is this kid not being the way he should be? Is she
neglecting something that she should be paying attention to? What is it? Focus on your own reasons. And as you go to that metacognitive level, let’s talk
about five specific things that you can do to become a better parent without
yelling. Number 1, be clear about what you control and what you don’t control.
As you take a moment to think about that, you’re going to notice that most of the
things you’re yelling about, you don’t control. Is that true for you? Most of the
things you yell about, you don’t control. Because if you controlled it, you just
control it. And you wouldn’t have to yell about it. Probably you’re trying to
change something that’s outside of your control. That is a recipe for frustration.
“Then, Dr. Paul, what can I do when my kid is too….” Whatever, fill in the blanks. Well,
there’s a lot of things you can do. We want to make sure that the things you
choose to do are squarely within your control.
That’s going to bring your frustration level down, and it’s going to make it
less likely that you’re going to feel like you have to yell. My second tip for you
today has to do with your own emotional state. I want you to focus on maintaining
a calm voice. A calm face and they calm body. Calm voice, calm face, calm body.
You’ll see in the positive parenting playlist that there’s a lot of videos
there. Two of which I invited my good friend Nickalene Peck to join me. And she
is the one that gave me this idea. Calm voice, calm face, calm body. When you, as a
parent is in that position, you can solve anything. There’s a lot of reasons
why I’m confident saying that. It changes your own mind, and it gives you the
resources that you’re going to need to be creative and to think about some
things that you might be able to do. Calm voice, calm face, calm body. Got it? Let’s
move to tip number 3. For this one, remember that children always have
choices. Always. At the very least, they can choose to
operate or not. They get to choose those things. For you, as a parent, try this
strategy. Give them two choices. There’s always door number 3, I know.
But you’re giving them two choices. Both of which you’re okay with. One of which
you control. That’s why we hit the control thing right up front. 2 choices,
you’re okay with both of them, you control one of them. Such an example. Let’s
say that your first grader is supposed to be getting dressed for school. Okay,
that scenario happens sometimes. But your first grader is dragging her feet. She
doesn’t want to get ready for school; she wants to play with her toys. 2 choices.
I’m okay with both of them; I control one of them. “Sweetie, you can get dressed and
ready by yourself, or I can assist you in getting dressed right now.” Alright. Do you
see I’m okay with both of them? Am I okay with her getting dressed by herself? Yeah,
sure. Am I okay with me assisting her to get
dressed? Well, yes, I am actually. Now, if you’re not okay with it, don’t offer it
as a choice. I’m okay with both. Which one do I control? The one where I assist her.
What if she chooses door number 3? No, you want to keep playing with my toys.
Well, that means that the one I control becomes the default. And I don’t have to yell
because I control it. As I walk over there and I start assisting her to get
dressed. Do you see how this works? Let’s do another quick example. Maybe with a
teenager. Let’s say that you’re 13- year old is supposed to take out
the garbage. That’s his chore for the week. But he
doesn’t want to take out the garbage. He wants to keep playing his video game,
right? 2 choices. “Son, you can take out the garbage on your own, or you can hire
me to do it. Either way, fine with me.” All right, I’m okay with both. Am I okay if he
doesn’t on his own? Absolutely. That’s kind of what I was planning. Am I okay to
have him hire me to do it? Yeah, that’s fine too.
Now, this brings up some questions, and we can talk about this in another video if
you want. What if he chooses that? Then I cheerfully go take out the garbage
because he hired me to do it at my rates. I charge a lot. My kids don’t hire me
much to do their chores because they tried it. How do I collect that? Well,
that’s probably a topic for another video. 2 choices. I’m okay with both of
them; I control one of them. That one becomes the default if they try to pick door
number 3. This puts you in a better control position, so you don’t feel
like you have to yell. You’ve got it. Tip number 4 ties into the things
that we’ve already talked about. I want to make it explicit and just peel it out
as its own tip. Separate the emotion from the discipline. So, the discipline
gets to be all business. There’s no emotional attachment. Did you hear how I
was presenting those examples earlier? You can do this, or you can do that.
Either way is really okay with me. You choose. When parents are smiling, kids are
thinking. If you’re all upset, well, you better do this right now. Then they know
that they’ve got you. If you get emotionally involved in the discipline,
it triggers something in their mind where they get this. I don’t know, it’s a
false sense of control or something. Like “Wow, I’m only eight years old, and I can
get a big person to lose control totally.” Yeah,
it’s a false power rush. When you take the emotion away from the discipline, and
the discipline becomes all business, put you in a power position as a parent.
And it secures your child. Children already know that they’re toast without
us. They know. Even in a little five-year-old mind. The kids thinking, “Oh
man, I I’m sure glad I got mom and dad here. If they disappeared, I’d be in a
world of hurt.” And they know that. And they might not express that to you, but
they know that. So, you give them a substantial stable presence that has the emotion and
the discipline separated. Put the feeling into the relationship. Which leads me
right to tip number 5. Remember your job. Remember your job. What’s your job
as a parent? It’s to love them no matter what and even if. No
matter what and even if. It’s not your job to make sure that they do their
chores. It’s not your job to make sure that they’re happy. It’s not your job to
make sure that they are productive citizens. That’s outside of your control.
Yes, we’re going to do what we can put all of the resources in place for our kids to have all of those things. Your job at the end of the day is to love
them no matter what and even if. Even if they don’t do their homework. Even if
they’re not productive citizens, even if they hate you.
Your job is still to love them no matter what and even if. That probably brings a
little bit of relief to your heart and mind. Because you know that you can do
that. From that position of feeling relieved and confident that you’ve got
your job, you can back off on the yelling. Because you’re already doing a great job.
You’re a benevolent, generous, loving parent. Your job is to love them
or what and even if. Parenting is not an easy task. Thank you for being here to be a conscious parent.

How To Deal With A Stubborn Child

Dealing with stubborn children is a challenge for parents because getting them to do even basic chores like taking a shower, eating a meal, or going to bed is a daily battle. Parents inadvertently encourage assertive behavior in children, by giving in to tantrums.
The best way to deal with a stubborn child is to show them that their behavior is not working. Please pay attention to their good behavior to achieve the desired result. Some tips that may help deal with a stubborn child.

How To Deal With A Stubborn Child?

Qualities of a stubborn child
Not every child who practices free will is stubborn. It is crucial to understand if your child is stubborn or determined before taking any vigorous action. Strong-willed kids can be brilliant and creative. They ask a lot of questions, which may appear as rebellion. They have opinions, and they are “doing.” On the one hand, stubborn kids stick to their ideas and won’t be ready to listen to what you have to say.

Here are some other characteristics that stubborn children may display

They have an urgent need to be recognized and listened to. So that might catch your attention a lot.
They can be very independent.
They are committed and determined to do what they like.
All kids get tantrums, but stubborn kids may do so often.
They have strong leadership qualities – they can be ‘bossy’ at times.
They like to do things at their own pace.
Managing a stubborn child can be difficult, but it isn’t all bad.
Stubborn Child Psychology: Understanding Stubborn Children
If a determination is one of your strong suits, you’d love to see it in your kids too. But the hard part is knowing the difference between persistence and stubbornness. So how do you distinguish one from the other?

The meaning of the dictionary is “constancy of purpose.”
Stubbornness having an unwavering determination to do something or act in a certain way. Simply, it refuses to change an individual’s thoughts, behavior, or actions regardless of outside pressure to do otherwise.
Stubbornness in children can be hereditary or a learned behavior due to environmental influences.
Dealing with stubborn children may require a little more patience and effort, as you will need to observe and understand your child’s behavior pattern carefully. Next, we will give you some tips that may help you deal with stubborn children.

Tips that may help deal with stubborn children.

You may have a stubborn child who refuses to stay in his crib or brush him aside every time you try to feed him. Or you may have a six-year-old who insists on wearing the same clothes every day and stomping his feet to challenge every rule or instruction you give him. Here are some tips that can come in handy while dealing with your child’s stubborn nature.

  1. Try to listen
Communication is a two-way street. If you want your baby to listen, you have to be ready to hear it first. Stubborn kids may have strong opinions and tend to argue.

They may become defiant if they feel they have not heard. Most of the time, when your child insists on doing or not doing something, listening to him, and having an open conversation about what is bothering him can do the trick. For example, if your child has a tantrum to end lunch, do not force your child to feed him. Instead, ask them why they don’t want to eat and listen – it could be because they are playful or have a tummy ache.

If you want your stubborn five-year-old to listen to you, try to approach calmly, pragmatically, and not face to face.

  1. Connect with them, don’t force them
When you force kids to do something, they tend to rebel and do whatever they shouldn’t. A better term to define this behavior is counter-will, which is a common feature of stubborn children. Counter will is instinctive and not just kids. Connect with your children.

For example, forcing your six-year-old to watch TV after bedtime won’t help. Instead, sit with them and show an interest in what they’re protecting. When you show you care, kids are more likely to respond.

Children who come into contact with their parents or caregivers want to cooperate. “Establishing an unwavering relationship with united children makes dealing with them easier,” says Susan Stifelman in her book Parenting Without Power Struggles.

Take the first step to bond with your baby today – hug him!

  1. Give them options
Stubborn kids might have a mind of their own, and they don’t always like being told what to do. Tell your stubborn four-year-old that he should be in bed by 9 p.m., and all you’ll get from them is “No!” Aloud. Tell your stubborn five-year-old to buy a toy of your choice, and he will not want to. Give your children options, not directions. Instead of telling them to go to bed, ask them if they’re going to read a bedtime story A or B.

Your child can continue the challenge and say, “I’m not going to sleep!” When that happens, keep calm and realistically tell them, “Well, that wasn’t an option.” You can repeat the same thing as many times as needed and as quietly as possible. When you sound like a broken cylinder, your baby will most likely give up.

However, a lot of the options aren’t that good either. For example, asking your child to choose one outfit from a wardrobe may leave him confused. You can avoid this problem by reducing the options to two or three groups that you choose and asking your child to choose from among them.

  1. Stay calm
Shouting at a defiant child and screaming will turn the normal parent-child conversation into a screaming match. Your child may take your response as an invitation to a verbal fight. That will only make matters worse. It’s up to you to steer the conversation into a practical outcome because you are an adult. Help your child understand the need to do something or act in a certain way.

Do what it takes to stay calm – meditate, exercise, or listen to music. Play soothing or soothing music at home so your children can hear. Every once in a while, turn on your child’s favorite music. This way, you can get their ‘vote’ and also enable them to relax.

  1. Please respect them
Your child probably won’t accept authority if you force it on him. Here are some ways you can model respect in your relationship:

Ask for cooperation, and do not insist on adhering to directions.
Establish steadfast rules for all of your children and not be easygoing just because you find them comfortable.
Empathize with them – don’t ignore their feelings or thoughts.
Let your children do what they can for themselves, and avoid the temptation to do something for them, to reduce their burden also tells them that you trust them.

Say what you mean and do what you say.
According to Betsy Brown-Brown, leading by example is the mantra to follow here because your kids are watching you all the time, author of “You’re Not Your Boss.”

  1. Work with them
Stubborn or strong-willed children are susceptible to how they are treated, so watch out for the tone, body language, and vocabulary you use. When they become uncomfortable with your behavior, they do what they know best to protect themselves: They rebel, speak up and display aggression.

Changing the way you interact with a stubborn child can change the way he interacts with you. Instead of telling them what to do, share with them.
Use phrases like “Let’s do this …” “What if we try this …” instead of “I want you to do …”.
Use fun activities to get your kids to do something. For example, if you want your stubborn child to put his toys away, start doing it yourself and ask him to be your “helper.”
You can also limit the activity time and challenge the child to put the toys away faster than you can. This is a deceptive trick that mostly works.

  1. Negotiation
Sometimes, it is necessary to negotiate with your children. It is common for them to act when they are not getting what they want. If you want them to listen, you need to know what is stopping them from doing so.

Start by asking questions like, “What is bothering you?” “Is there anything important?” Or “Do you want anything?” To get them to talk about it. This tells them that you respect their desires and are willing to consider them.
Negotiation doesn’t necessarily mean that you always give in to their demands. It’s all about being mindful and practical.
For example, your child may not be ready to go to bed at a specific hour. Instead of insisting, try to negotiate a bedtime that works for both of you.

  1. Create an appropriate environment at home
Children learn through observation and experience (3). If they see their parents arguing all the time, they will learn to imitate it. Marital discord between parents can lead to a stressful environment in the home, affecting the children’s mood and behavior. According to a study, marital discord may lead to social withdrawal and even aggression in children (4).
  2. Understand the child’s point of view
To better understand your child’s stubborn behavior, try to look at the situation from his perspective. Put yourself in your child’s shoes and try to visualize what he must go through for him to behave this way. The more you know about your child, the better you can deal with his stubborn streak.

Empathize with the child without even giving in to his demands. You can understand their disappointment, anger, or frustration, and support them while you are assertive.

For example, if your child is not ready to do his homework, he feels overwhelmed with the task. If there is a lot to do or if your child is unable to focus, you can help by breaking down the homework into smaller tasks that can be completed in a short time. You can include short breaks of a minute or two between charges to make the activity less stressful.

  1. Promote positive behavior
There will be times when you will not know what to do with stubborn children to control their anger and aggressive behavior. But if you act without thinking, they may develop a negative attitude towards the problem and even inadvertently reinforce their malicious behavior.

For example, your child might say, “No!” Almost everything you say. Think about it – do you say “no” often? If yes, then you are reinforcing the malicious behavior by example.

One way to change your child’s adverse reactions is with the “yes” game, a smart strategy recommended by marriage and family specialist Susan Stifelman.

When playing this game, your child must say “yes” or “no” to everything. Questions like “You like ice cream, don’t you?” “Do you like to play with your games?” Or “Do you want to know if your dinosaur is floating in the bathtub tomorrow?” You are more likely to get a “yes” from your child. The more your child responds positively, the more likely he will feel like being heard and appreciated.

How to deal with some common problems with a stubborn child
Here are some common issues parents are likely to encounter while dealing with a stubborn child

  1. How to train a stubborn child to use the bathroom?
Toilet training is challenging the way it is, but it can get excruciating when dealing with a stubborn child. You can train your determined, aggressive three-year-old by:

I’m talking about.
Explain to them how this is done.
Make it fun – don’t be serious if your child refuses to use the toilet.
Remember that a stubborn child may take longer to learn to use the toilet than an obedient child. You need to be patient and work with your child to help him reach the goal, rather than pushing him towards him.

  1. How do you make a stubborn child eat?
Kids tend to be very passionate when it comes to food. However, you cannot always feed your baby what he wants. The best way to make sure your stubborn kids get what’s right for them is to make dinner time fun.

Use creative ways to introduce food to your baby.
Have them participate at the dinner table (ask them to prepare, serve, etc.).
Encourage them to try the food (just one bite) before rejecting it. Offer them small portions of everything and let them choose.
Reward them with candy or a treat if they finish their meal.

  1. How do you punish a stubborn child?
Children need rules and discipline. Your child should know that there will be good or bad consequences for his actions.

Make sure they are fully aware of the consequences of breaking the rules.

The consequences should be immediate, especially when you are dealing with children so that they can relate their actions to the result. Taking breaks, cutting back on playtime or watching television, and devoting little to home tasks can be a few ways to discipline a child. You can also be creative with the consequences, depending on the problem.

Remember, the idea is not to punish the child but to make them aware that their behavior is wrong.

Characteristics Of A Stubborn Child

Not every child who practices free will is stubborn. It is important to understand if your child is stubborn or determined before taking any vigorous action. Strong-willed kids can be very smart and creative. They ask a lot of questions, which may appear as rebellion. They have opinions, and they are “doing.” On the one hand, stubborn kids stick to their opinions and won’t be ready to listen to what you have to say.

Here are some other characteristics that stubborn children may display

They have an urgent need to be recognized and listened to. So they might catch your attention a lot.

Stubbornness is defined as having an unwavering determination to do something or act in a certain way.

11 Tips For Understanding Your Child’s Emotional Development

How To Deal With A Stubborn Child?

One of the most important things you can do, as a parent, is to understand your child’s feelings and question the meaning of his behavior. No, you don’t need a “certification” in parenting. However, what you want to take the time is to recognize the unique qualities your baby brings with them from the moment of birth – what makes them laugh or cry, and what motivates or annoys them.

The need to understand your child’s experience

Parents often understandably look for answers to solve problems. But research shows that just being curious about the meaning of your child’s behavior helps him regulate his big emotions, think flexibly, and manage social situations. While you may sometimes not understand the meaning of your child’s behavior, simply questioning rather than misinterpreting and jumping to conclusions can be helpful. Parents play a major role in a child’s emotional development.

Some basic knowledge about emotional development can help parents contribute meaningfully to a child’s emotional development.

Tips for understanding your child’s emotional experience

Parenting is more than just providing comfort for your children. It is the child’s emotional presence, and it provides them with a feeling of security. Here are some basic child psychology tips that will help you better understand children:

  1. Observation is the key

Careful monitoring is one of the simplest and most effective ways to learn about your child’s experience. Show interest in what your children do or say. Watch their actions, expressions, and moods. Keep in mind that every child is unique. Your child will be different from you and their siblings. Ask yourself some questions that can help you understand your child’s psyche.

What does your child like to do most?

How do they react when they have to do something they don’t like, such as eating certain foods, going to bed, or doing their homework?
How are they social? Are they willing to participate or try new things?
How long does it take for your child to learn about his surroundings? Are they able to adapt to changes in the environment?

As you answer these questions, remember not to judge the child. Just notice to be informed.

  1. Spend a “great” time with your children

Fathers today are busy reconciling work and home. Multitasking, as they call it, allows them to take care of many things simultaneously, one of the “things” being the child. If you spend time with your baby this way, it is time for a change. If you want to understand your children, you need to make time for them.

Conversations with your children let you know what is happening in their life at school and at home, what their favorite music or TV shows are, what gets them excited and what doesn’t.

A good time doesn’t always mean talking or doing something together. Sometimes you can sit together and silently observe them gather some insights into their experience.

  1. Children benefit from focusing on attention

Even if it’s only for short periods, it can be helpful to focus your full attention on being and listening to your baby. You can spend a lot of time with them while doing other tasks like cooking dinner and taking them to school. This time is important, too. But even 10 minutes of “special time” can go a long way toward creating a positive home environment and building your relationship with your child.

If possible, try to have activities that allow you to spend time exclusively with each child. When you give your child full attention, he feels safe and validated and more likely to open up to you.

  1. Pay attention to your child’s environment
Research has shown that a child’s behavior and attitudes are largely shaped by the environment in which they are raised (1). The home environment can affect a child’s brain development, which in turn affects the development of their language and cognitive skills (2).

Your child’s behavior is influenced by the people around him and by the quality of interactions. Take the time to gauge the type of atmosphere created at home and school.

Understanding Your Child’s Emotional Development
  1. They have a basic knowledge of brain development
The brain grows in relationships. Some researchers in the field of child development refer to parents as “nerve engineers.” When children interact with a caregiver who focuses on them, it helps develop connections between brain cells. The brain is shaped by the experiences a child goes through, and this, in turn, affects how he responds to different situations.

Positive interactions can influence brain development to facilitate development in a healthy way. Conversely, negative experiences such as a constant combat environment or emotional neglect can have a negative effect on brain development. According to Daniel J. Siegel, author of The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies for Nurturing Your Child’s Developing Mind, you can help your children build a solid foundation for a healthy social and emotional life, empower them to deal with challenging situations, with a basic understanding of brain functions.

  1. Listen
Listening is important when you are having a conversation with your child. You can start a conversation to get your child to talk but then make an effort to listen to what he’s trying to say. Babies may not be able to express themselves clearly, which is why it is so helpful to pay attention to the words they use and their nonverbal cues as well.

focus on:
Tone, the way they emphasize a word or phrase.
Expressions that tell you how they feel. Try to gauge their feelings when they talk about something to understand if they like it, if they are afraid of it, or if they are nervous about it. Body language, watch out for eye contact, and how they use their hands and stance.
Not only do you have to listen, but you must also let your child know that they are being heard and take them seriously. Acknowledge what he’s saying and respond to let him know that you are trying to understand what he’s saying. If you don’t understand, ask questions for clarification. But be careful not to talk too much or ask too many questions, as this can lead to disconnections.

  1. Children express feelings in different ways

Besides talking, children express their feelings through activities.

If your kids love to draw, write, or act, encourage them to do so often. Taking art or painting classes can help them express themselves better. Your child may choose to keep a diary in which he can write about what they did on a certain day and how they felt about it. The more your child writes or draws, the better he can express himself.
Show your interest in their artwork, but be careful not to overinterpret it, or else you may end up distracting your emotions like theirs. If you misunderstand their work, take time to resolve the misunderstanding.

  1. Ask questions that encourage communication

If you want your child to share their intentions, certain types of questions can help. Instead of asking, “Do you like this song?” Which calls for a “yes” or “no,” ask, “What do you think about this song?” Which will provide an opportunity for your child to say more.

While you may not have an answer to the questions, your child raises, ignoring a child’s question as silly can discourage him from asking any questions in the future.

  1. Educate yourself about child development

Some understanding of child development gathered from books or professionals may be helpful. But always remember that you are the expert regarding your child. An excessive parenting counseling culture can undermine a parent’s normal experience.

  1. Show empathy

When you take your child’s feelings seriously while telling them that you may not have the exact same feelings, you are helping them possess their emotional experience. For example, a young child may have a meltdown because he cannot find his or her red drinking cup but must instead use the green one.

Their strong emotions come from feelings of helplessness and frustration. While you do not have the same feelings and may think that the difference is not important, taking their feelings seriously while setting limits on their behavior shows them that you respect their point of view.

  1. Understand your child’s temperament

Every child has a unique set of traits and ways to interact with the world. Some are more likely to be flexible while others are comfortable with the routine. Some are likable, while others are very sensitive to different forms of sensory input. Children have different ways of dealing with transformations and change. Starting at birth, observing your baby’s special way of being in the world can support his healthy development.

Take the challenge

Understanding your child’s emotional development takes time and effort. If you have more than one child, then each child will be different. While a consistent parenting style can be beneficial and reassuring for all of your children, being flexible according to each child’s unique mood is important. The time and care you take to understand your child’s emotional experience will help develop a healthy adult.
