Coronavirus update San Antonio, Jan. 25: Leaders report 2,082 new COVID-19 cases, 13 new deaths - KSAT San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff updated the community about the local response to COVID-19 in their daily briefing Monday night.

Nirenberg reported 162,108 total COVID-19 cases and 1,980 total deaths in Bexar County, an increase of 2,082 new cases as of Monday. Thirteen new deaths were reported today.

The mayor says some of Sunday’s cases were included in Monday’s numbers due to a backlog.

The 7-day moving average of cases is 1,722.

City officials also reported that 1,402 patients are hospitalized, 409 are in the intensive care unit and 263 are on ventilators. There are 13% of staffed beds available and 51% of ventilators available.

Nirenberg said the COVID-19 Risk Level this week is “severe,” and many of the risk indicators have either stabilized or improved for the first time in weeks. The positivity rate has decreased to 15%, down from 17.5% last week.

In amazing report, CDC says only one child has died of flu this season | TheHill - The Hill

As more than 28 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the U.S. with 520,000 deaths over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, the flu season this year has been virtually nonexistent.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), just 0.1 percent of specimens tested across the country are coming back positive for influenza. That stands in stark contrast with roughly 20 to 30 percent of positive cases recorded during recent flu seasons.

Our country is in a historic fight against the Coronavirus. Add Changing America to your Facebook or Twitter feed to stay on top of the news.

The CDC also reports that just one child in the U.S. has died due to flu this season, compared with 195 U.S. children who died in total during the 2019-2020 flu season.

There’s also been a significant decline in influenza deaths among U.S. adults, with about 450 flu-related deaths so far this year. Roughly 22,000 people died during the 2019-2020 flu season.

Public health experts say school closures, remote work and precautions such as hand-washing, masking and social distancing prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic have likely led to the very low number of flu cases, deaths and hospitalizations.

In December, the CDC said a record number of flu vaccinations had been administered after public health officials urged the public to get the flu shot and warned of a “twindemic” of both influenza and COVID-19 straining hospitals.

“I think this has clearly shown that masking, distancing, hand-washing — all these things clearly work,” Aaron Milstone, an epidemiologist and professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University, told The Washington Post. “So I think the question will be, how much appetite do people have for all that to prevent influenza, instead of just COVID.”

Health officials have warned, however, that next flu season may be unusually worse, as people aren’t being exposed to influenza this year and more will be susceptible to becoming infected.

Polk County to delay expanding vaccine eligibility - KCCI Des Moines

The Polk County Health Department said it will delay providing COVID-19 vaccines to newly qualified individuals until more individuals in the previous tier are vaccinated. On Thursday, the Iowa Department of Public Health announced that starting March 8, providers can administer vaccines to those 64 years old and younger who have medical conditions that put them at risk. The Polk County Health Department said it will not expand vaccine availability until at least 70% of the current tier are vaccinated, which includes individuals 65 years and older, first responders, school staff, early childhood education workers, child care workers and health care workers and individuals working and living at long-term care facilities.According to a news release from the department, Polk County vaccine allocation from the state is limited.“Our primary goal is to get as many people vaccinated in our community as possible, but we also recognize the stress and frustration that people experience when the competition is high for a limited supply,” said Polk County Board of Supervisors Chair Angela Connolly in an emailed statement. “The last thing that we want to do is make it even more difficult for the current tier to access the vaccine.”The Polk County Health Department said COVID-19 vaccine demand continues to exceed supply in the county, but the ability to provide vaccines to a wider group of residents could change in the state increases the county’s allocation.A Hy-Vee spokesperson confirmed to KCCI Friday that Polk County residents 64 and under with pre-existing conditions will be able to receive vaccines at Polk County stores despite the Polk County Health Department’s decision.According to the spokesperson, some Polk County residents had been told they would not be able to get the vaccine at Hy-Vee starting Monday.Hy-Vee said anyone who made vaccine appointments at Polk County stores but had the appointment canceled can reschedule.Additional vaccine information can be found here.

The Polk County Health Department said it will not expand vaccine availability until at least 70% of the current tier are vaccinated, which includes individuals 65 years and older, first responders, school staff, early childhood education workers, child care workers and health care workers and individuals working and living at long-term care facilities.

According to a news release from the department, Polk County vaccine allocation from the state is limited.

“Our primary goal is to get as many people vaccinated in our community as possible, but we also recognize the stress and frustration that people experience when the competition is high for a limited supply,” said Polk County Board of Supervisors Chair Angela Connolly in an emailed statement. “The last thing that we want to do is make it even more difficult for the current tier to access the vaccine.”

The Polk County Health Department said COVID-19 vaccine demand continues to exceed supply in the county, but the ability to provide vaccines to a wider group of residents could change in the state increases the county’s allocation.

A Hy-Vee spokesperson confirmed to KCCI Friday that Polk County residents 64 and under with pre-existing conditions will be able to receive vaccines at Polk County stores despite the Polk County Health Department’s decision.

According to the spokesperson, some Polk County residents had been told they would not be able to get the vaccine at Hy-Vee starting Monday.

Hy-Vee said anyone who made vaccine appointments at Polk County stores but had the appointment canceled can reschedule.

90 percent of COVID deaths occur in countries with high obesity levels: study - New York Post

Nearly 90 percent of coronavirus fatalities have occurred in countries with high obesity levels, according to researchers — who now want overweight people to be prioritized for vaccinations.

Death rates were 10 times higher in countries such as the US where at least 50 percent of the total population is overweight, according to a World Health Organization-backed study released Thursday  by the World Obesity Federation.

“[This] must act as a wake-up call to governments globally,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, according to the Financial Times. “The correlation between obesity and mortality rates from COVID-19 is clear and compelling.”

Weight is now believed to be the second-biggest predictor of severe illness from the virus after age, according to the study, which represents medical professionals at 50 regional and national obesity associations.

For the report, researchers examined mortality data from Johns Hopkins University and the WHO Global Health Observatory data that showed a total of 2.2 million of the 2.5 million deaths worldwide were in countries with high levels of obesity.

Researchers didn’t find any examples of high COVID-19 death rates in countries where less than 40 percent of the population was overweight, according to the report.

For example, Vietnam has the lowest coronavirus death rate in the world and the second-lowest level of overweight people, at just 0.04 deaths per 100,000 from COVID-19 with 18.3 percent of adults overweight, according to WHO data.

By contrast, the UK has the third-highest COVID-19 death rate in the world and the fourth-highest obesity rate, with 184 deaths per 100,000 and 63.7 percent of adults overweight.

The US saw about 152 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 and has a 68 percent obesity rate.

Tim Lobstein, senior policy adviser to the WOF and the report’s author, called the increase in national death rates linked to obesity “dramatic.”

Meanwhile, according to a study released last month, Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine may be less effective in protecting obese people.

Researchers in Rome found that obese people who had received two doses of the vaccine generated a weaker antibody response, according to a report on the pre-print server Medrxiv.

The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, evaluated the effect of the vaccine on 248 health care workers seven days after the final dose, the Guardian reported.

Researchers at the National Cancer Institute Regina Elena found that those considered obese — defined as having a body mass index over 30 — produced about half the amount of antibodies compared with people who had a healthy body weight, the Guardian reported.

It’s not currently known what level of antibodies is necessary to neutralize the virus, but experts fear that a reduced antibody response may hinder inoculation efforts.
