How the Latest COVID-19 Contact-Tracing Apps Actually Work

How the Latest COVID-19 Contact-Tracing Apps Actually Work

At least 21 percent of the U.S. population has access to one of the official COVID-19 contact-tracing apps developed by various state governments, but only a fraction of people actually use them.

And that’s the inherent problem with these kinds of apps: Enough people must use them for them to be at all effective. I get why there’s so much trepidation: There’s still a lot we don’t know about COVID-19; tech companies have a terrible track record with data privacy; government surveillance is a real threat; and America’s current political and social climate is challenging (to put it mildly). People are naturally going to be skeptical in the face of so many questions and concerns.

So let’s focus on what we do know about the latest contact-tracing apps.

The tech protects user privacy

Eleven U.S. states, plus Guam, have official contact-tracing apps available now. Ten more have announced plans to release their own, including California and Arizona, two states with apps currently in beta testing. Most of the state-developed apps use contact-tracing technology that is now built into the latest versions of Android and iOS by default.

Instead of using geographic data or wifi, these apps ping nearby devices using a low-power Bluetooth signal—without sharing any personal data. If one user tests positive, the app sends an alert to all of the devices that were close enough to register each other; none of the tracing or contacting is done based on name, phone number, or other personally-identifying information.

iPhones and Android phones can do this by default, so developers don’t need to create their own tracing technology. In fact, many contact-tracing apps are open-source, meaning the code is freely available and readable by anyone.

Your phone still needs an app

While its true that Android and iOS now have built-in contact-tracing capabilities, those features are different from the functions of the apps themselves. Your phone still needs a contact-tracing app in order to use those features, and such an app will not just mysteriously show up on your device. No one is forcing you to use them.

Even if you believe that these apps are spying on everyone, the argument falls short given all the information you already surrender to various companies (including Apple and Google) simply by using their hardware, software, and services. Companies (and governments) don’t need to hide their data collection behind a contact-tracing app. They’re already doing it right out in the open.

Scams and malware are a bigger issue

It’s true the initial wave of contact-tracing apps was rife with privacy issues. Some of these security flaws were accidental; others were deliberate. However, most of these occurred before Apple and Google rolled out their contact-tracing APIs, and are entirely unrelated.

There were also reports of “contact-tracing” arrests after protests—which is a serious issue—but it’s more accurate to call those “social-engineering” arrests; the police weren’t using data from contact-tracing apps to make arrests. Low-level Bluetooth tracing can confirm that devices pinged one another, but no useful identifying info can be gleaned from that.

That said, independent developers are still free to use different methods of tracing if they choose, and that’s where things get shady. Coronavirus scams and malicious apps are on the rise. Hackers and identity thieves will definitely try to dupe you into fake contact-tracing apps and websites. As long as you’re using an official open-source app from your state, one that uses the APIs built into your phone for contact-tracing, there’s little to worry about. Or, to frame it differently, the benefits you’ll experience from knowing that you were potentially exposed to a life-threatening disease should far outweigh any other concerns you might have.

ViacomCBS sells Simon & Schuster to Penguin Random House for $2 billion – CNBC

ViacomCBS announced Wednesday that it would sell publishing company Simon & Schuster to Penguin Random House, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann, in a deal worth nearly $2.18 billion

The transaction is expected to close in 2021.

The deal comes after ViacomCBS put the global publisher up for auction, a move it made to divest non-core assets from its company. Proceeds from the deal will be put toward ViacomCBS’s streaming business, fund its dividend and pay down debt. The company also recently sold CNET for $500 million as part of this strategy.

Steaming has become a particularly important avenue for media companies as coronavirus cases have risen and traditional entertainment outlets like movie theaters and theme parks are largely closed to the public or viewed as unsafe destinations.

With Simon & Schuster as part of the company, Bertelsmann’s publishing empire will account for about a third of all books sold in the U.S. The deal would put some of the world’s bestselling authors including John Grisham, Bob Woodward, Doris Kearns Goodwin and Stephen King under the same corporate umbrella.

Simon & Schuster will continue to be managed as a separate publishing unit under Penguin Random House. Jonathan Karp, president and CEO of Simon & Schuster, alongside Dennis Eulau, who acts as chief operating officer and chief financial officer for the company, will continue to helm the publishing company.

The deal could draw attention from the U.S. Justice Department, as the combined shares of Simon & Schuster and Penguin Random House are large enough to dredge up antitrust concerns.

Through Oct. 24, Penguin Random House accounted for around 25% of all print books sold in the U.S. Simon & Schuster accounted for about 9.1%, according to market researcher NPD Group. With Simon & Schuster as part of its portfolio, Bertelsmann’s U.S. market share would jump to around 34%. The second-largest publisher, HarperCollins, comparatively accounts for around 11% of books sold in the U.S.

Since Simon & Schuster has a market share below 20%, the deal would be approvable, Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Rabe told reporters, according to multiple media accounts.

Book sales have been particularly robust this year as the coronavirus pandemic has limited other entertainment options. There is also a strong interest in political memoirs and books on social justice. In the nine-month period end Oct. 3, print book sales rose 6.4% from the prior year, according to data from NPD BookScan.

Nintendo’s Game & Watch can run Doom, barely – The Verge

https://www.theverge.com/2020/11/23/21611884/nintendo-game-and-watch-doom-port-hack-homebrew-games

Nintendo’s Game & Watch can run Doom, barely - The Verge

Intrepid developers have done the expected and necessary: Doom now runs on Nintendo’s recently released Game & Watch portable. The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. was designed to run three games, but successfully porting Doom shows it can handle others if you have a lot of patience (via Hackaday).

This version of Doom is not perfect, of course. In order to get the game to run even at the slower speed shown in the video below, sound had to be disabled and textures had to be simplified to fit the game on the small portable. And getting that far wasn’t easy: programmers stacksmashing and Konrad Beckmann had to trick the Game & Watch to offload its firmware by injecting code into the external storage accessed by the Game & Watch’s tiny microcontroller.

Finding a version of Doom small enough to fit on the Game & Watch’s meager amount of storage was a separate issue. The hackers settled on a package called “Minimal Doom IWAD” that replaces the game’s original textures with simplified versions, but they still had to make further adjustments like disabling sound to work within the Game & Watch’s 1.1 MB of usable storage.

The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. is designed to evoke Nintendo’s original Game & Watch handhelds, while running a version of Nintendo’s NES classic, Super Mario Bros., as well as Super Mario Bros. 2 (known in the West as The Lost Levels). (It also runs a Mario-themed version of the Game & Watch game Ball). Doom’s demon-slaying action wasn’t ported to a Nintendo console until the more powerful SNES was released, so showing up on a tiny device designed to run NES games is as unusual as it is impressive.

Doom is an old standby for programmers experimenting with homebrew games. The game has showed up in all sorts of places: from a Samsung refrigerator running xCloud, to a Windows PC built in Minecraft, and even the Touch Bar of a MacBook Pro. Thanks to this work, Doom seems right at home on a Game & Watch, and soon, other homebrew games might be, too.
